Old Town Houses in Shanghai
Built while under the heavy influence of European and American settlers, these are the typical buildings that can be found in a part of Shanghai known as Old Town. This is where the Shanghainese themselves were decamped to and forced to work for a pittance to provide the western people with sumptuous silk clothing and other luxuries. For those of you who have seen Mission: Impossible III, Old Town was where the Shanghai scenes were filmed. The Chinese Government didn't like the fact that Cruise and co had not shown Shanghai in its more modern light - instead opting to show the old style Shanghai; clothes being hung from bamboo sticks and between trees, wires haphazardly linked to each house to provide electricity and telephone links - and so delayed the release of the film to Chinese audiences in protest at the biased and stereotypical view of China that was portrayed.
