Headless Olympic Mascots
Known collectively as Fuwa, there are five mascots (called Beibei, Jingjing, Huanhuan, Yingying and Nini) for the 2008 Beijing Olympics, each one representing a colour of one of the Olympic Rings as well as four of China's most popular animals (Fish, Panda, Tibetan Antelope and the Swallow) and the Olympic flame. Teenagers were employed to dress as the mascots and walk around the park and greet people by saying "Bei Jing Huan Ying Ni" - welcome to Beijing (the eagle eyed among you will have spotted that each word is made up of the name of a mascot, whose names are one syllable words repeated twice - a traditional way of expressing affection for children in China). Obviously this group of teenagers got somewhat bored and removed their heads, which I found highly amusing. I wonder how many law suits would have been filed were that to have taken place in the west? And on that note, I take no responsibility for the loss of innocence of you young ones who have become traumatised by seeing headless Olympic mascots...
